Common questions

The camera or location isn’t working

Open iPhone Settings → CivicChange and make sure Camera and Location are allowed (Location: While Using the App). You can always tap the map or search an address instead.

It says “We can’t check for updates right now”

The city’s data service didn’t respond. Check your connection and tap Try again. This is different from “We haven’t found a recent city record”, which means the service answered but nothing recent matched.

Why can’t I find a place outside San Francisco?

CivicChange covers San Francisco for now. Outside the city, you can still search a San Francisco address or explore the map.

How do I delete my account?

Open Account → Delete account in the app. Your account and everything saved to it is permanently removed. You can also email us from the address on your account and we’ll do it for you.

Does saving a place send me alerts?

Not yet. Saving keeps a place in your list so you can check back. We’ll only promise alerts once they work.

The answer looks wrong or out of date

CivicChange explains records exactly as the city publishes them, with the date of each record. If a record is wrong, the issuing department (for example the Department of Building Inspection or Planning) can correct it, and the update will appear here. If the app misread a record, email us the address and what you expected.

Is CivicChange an official city service?

No. It isn’t affiliated with the City and County of San Francisco. It explains public records from DataSF in plain language and links to the originals.
